Mental illnesses can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, religion, or income. Unfortunately, because of misunderstanding, negative attitudes, shame, and fear of discrimination, a lot of people are still afraid to talk about their mental illness. That’s why it’s so important for us to raise awareness and Make It OK.
Importance of Awareness
People with a mental illness often wait an average of 10 years to seek treatment. Even though mental illness is common–one in five individuals in the U.S. experience a mental illness every year–and is a treatable medical condition, the stigma surrounding it still prevents many from seeking help. By breaking down that stigma, people with mental illnesses will feel safe to share their challenges and recovery journey. Raising awareness and eliminating the mental health and mental illness stigma will make it easier for individuals and families right here in our community to ask for help in finding treatment and resources.
