Peace River Center is the recipient of two Impact Lakeland grants awarded by the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland via the George W. Jenkins Fund. The first award will fund A Play in the Sun project which is a makeover of the play yard at the Children’s Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) located in Bartow. Children experiencing psychiatric emergencies who are placed under the order of a Baker Act are transported to this locked inpatient facility for observation and stabilization. It is the only such facility serving children under the age of 10 years old in Polk, Hardee or Highlands counties. Peace River Center’s Children’s CSU received 696 children last year who were between the ages of 5 and 17.
The second award is for the Economic Freedom for Survivors of Domestic Violence project. Peace River Center provides two domestic violence shelters serving Polk, Hardee and Highlands counties. The shelters are located in Lakeland and Sebring. Individuals who are seeking shelter there will benefit from this project by learning how to establish financial independence apart from their abusers. Survivors will learn how to replace lost assets of income, a place to live, childcare and healthcare by learning to avoid predatory lending, build good credit , access affordable housing and build assets.
The combined total of the two Impact Lakeland grant awards is over $54,000. Bill Gardam, CEO of Peace River Center remarked, “I am very pleased by the award of these two grants that will help us provide improved services to some of the most vulnerable in our community. We appreciate the work done by the Community Foundation of Central Florida and the benevolent support provided through the George W. Jenkins Fund that made the Impact Lakeland grant awards possible. The mission of Peace River Center is to engage, restore and empower individuals in our community to reach their fullest potential. These grants will directly help us fulfill our mission and help families.”
