Peace River Center to Host Domestic Violence Awareness Event on October 22, 2011
These are the facts: Over 6 million people are victims of Domestic Violence in the U.S. annually and 1 in 4 women will experience Domestic Violence in their lifetime. Domestic Violence is the largest cause of injury to women - more than auto accidents, sexual assaults, and muggings. In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Peace River Center Victim Services is hosting a free event on Saturday, October 22 from 9 AM to 12 PM at Sebring Circle (100-198 Circle Park Drive, Sebring, Fl 33870). Guest speaker Highlands County Sheriff Susan Benton, will address the gathering to raise awareness about the local domestic violence crisis. Community social service agencies will be present including Big Brothers Big Sisters, YMCA, the JASA Program, Peace River Center and several others. There will also be a Drum Circle, Tai Chi demonstration, a performance by Highlands Idol winner and a Remembrance Walk. Participants in the Remembrance Walk will carry balloons with the names of victims of domestic violence who lost their lives in the Tri-County area between 2010-2011. Peace River Center Victim Services will offer T-Shirts and cupcakes in exchange for donations benefiting their clients.
